Städische Forggenseeschifffahrt - boats on the lake

With its length of 12 kilometres and width of 3, the Forggensee extends further than all the other lakes in the Allgäu and with its area of 16 km² it is the fourth largest lake in Bavaria. It was created in the 1950s as the Lechstausee artificial lake, serving as a head reservoir for the hydro-electric works further down the Lech river. It is also important for regulating high water, particularly in spring, when the Lech carries a lot of water after the snows have melted.   The special feature of the Forggensee: it only reaches its full dammed height from the 1st June to mid-October. During this time, no-one can see that it is not a natural lake, it fits so well into the landscape.
